74% of registered voters favor the transparency and good governance ballot measure.
OAKLAND – A new poll shows huge support for Measure W, the Oakland Fair Elections Act, among voters. After reading the question on the ballot, 74% of registered voters indicated support for Measure W, with 8% of registered voters opposed, and 16% undecided. Support among likely voters was even higher, with 79% favoring Measure W.
“By requiring transparency in campaign ads, voters will be able to know what groups and special interests are funding a candidate or campaign.” -Viola Gonzales, President of the League of Women Voters of Oakland
Measure W would create crucial reforms to ensure Oakland city government represents Oaklanders rather than wealthy out of state special interests:
- Transparency requirements for independent expenditures, forcing campaign ads to list their top three donors
- Lower contribution limits, ensuring everyday Oaklanders don’t get crowded out by wealthy elites
- An innovative Democracy Dollars program to give each Oakland resident four $25 vouchers to donate to an eligible local candidate of their choice, empowering voters
Measure W will create an Oakland city government that is more representative and responsive to the needs of Oaklanders. It has recently been endorsed by the League of Women Voters, the Alameda County Democratic Party, the Oakland Education Association, Sierra Club, Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), Oakland Tenants Union, and many more.
“I’m so encouraged to see Oaklanders from every corner of the city supporting Measure W. From the beginning, our grassroots coalition has engaged with voters and community groups throughout the city to make sure voters know the stakes of this election. I’m proud to see this support for Measure W, as Oakland works to build a strong, more representative democracy.” -Jonathan Mehta Stein, Executive Director, California Common Cause
The poll was conducted by ReThink Media, with a sample size of 400 voters contacted online. The margin of error is 4.9%. For more details, please consult the attached memo.
