A New Network of Resistance in Town
As a founding member of Bay Rising, Oakland Rising is joining forces with labor unions and social justice organizations to stand up to the attacks and rollbacks of the Trump regime. Our movement is called Bay Resistance, and together we’re staging weekly actions every Tuesday for the first 100 days of this administration.
Justice Reinvestment Moving Forward
The latest on our work to decrease the county’s spending on incarceration and increase its investments in opportunities our community.
Lead East Bay
Oakland Rising and our sister organization Oakland Rising Action are launching Lead East Bay this spring, a program that will identify, recruit and train cohorts of working class people of color to serve in public leadership roles in our city and our region.
Inaugurate Resistance: Join Us January 20th
This Friday we will mark the beginning of a period of resistance in the name of love, liberation and unity. Please join us in San Francisco to show the country and the world that we will not be silenced nor will we tolerate abuse from any level of our government or institutions.
Social Justice Issues Briefing for Oakland Elected Officials

A Space for Post-Election Healing
Earlier this month Oakland Rising hosted a day of reflection and renewal for our voter outreach staff who worked on our fall campaign. Our first ever post-election “Healing Retreat,” we invited all campaign staff and full-time Oakland Rising staff and collaborative partners to participate.
Jim Crow 2.0: Modern Voter Suppression and Threats to Voting Rights
From initially limiting voting rights only to white male property-owners, to the creation of the electoral college, to modern day legalized voter suppression through voter identification laws, democracy in the U.S. has been hardwired since its inception to undermine the principle of “one person, one vote.”
Connecting Tragedy to the Larger Crisis
Jessamyn here, wanting to share my thoughts:
The #Ghostship fire has me in deep despair. I’m mourning the loss of so many people…creatives and friends of friends. The loss continues to grow as we learn more.
As I grieve, I’m remembering our old office that was across the street from where the family and friends’ crisis center is now located at the sheriff’s office on E12th and Miller Ave/25th, just blocks from the fire.
Building the Electorate with Millennials of Color
Millennials – people age 18 to 34 – now make up the largest and most diverse age group in California. With 4 million potential young voters, we have the power to propel forward issues that really matter to us and our communities. This election cycle, we experimented with using Hustle, a text-based organizing app, to contact young voters of color.
Post-Election Wrap Up
Watching the results roll in from the November 8th election was both inspiring and terrifying. While California said a resounding YES to funding education, healthcare and reforming the criminal justice system, those who voted for president said yes to fear, hatred and division.
