Although, never officially a Black Panther member, Tolbert Small was the official physician to Oakland’s chapter of the Black Panther Party.
While in medical school in Detroit Michigan, Tolbert was a member of SNCC and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Tolbert’s internship landed him at Oakland’s Highland Hospital. Besides tending to the medical needs of the BPP, Tolbert also co-founded, with his wife Anola Price Small, the Harriet Tubman Medical Office. The Harriet Tubman Medical Office has been a resource to Oakland’s poor and working class residents for decades.
