Today Ericka Huggins is a professor of Women’s Studies at CSU, East Bay. Her political career got its early start in Los Angeles with the Black Panther Party.

Due to the Black Panther Party’s high profile, key members like Ericka Huggins became political targets. In 1969, along with fellow Panther Bobby Seale, Ericka Huggins faced conspiracy charges. The result of which was her imprisonment for two years, until the charges were dropped. Upon release from prison, Ericka Huggins remained very active in the community. In 1976, Ericka Huggins became the first woman and black person to be appointed to the Alameda County Board of Education.
