Our community experienced a tragic loss yesterday as Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan was fatally injured. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family. The loss is reverberating throughout the community as her leadership and commitment to environmental health, immigrants, working class people and so many other critical issues will be greatly missed. As a woman of color and API woman, Sup. Chan broke down barriers as she stepped into leadership roles representing our communities at the county and state level. She was never afraid to stand up for justice and be the dissenting voice around the criminalization of our communities, and always asserted the voice of community orgs that were fighting to refund the community. Sup. Chan will be remembered for her kindness, graciousness and gentle presence.
