“Voter engagement and getting people to vote is the easiest part. We need community to stand ten toes down even after Election Day.” -Chaney Turner, Voter Engagement Director

Oakland Rising is excited to announce our new Voter Engagement Director: Chaney Turner!

Chaney comes to us at the right time to advance forward our efforts to flex people power. Chaney is an entrepreneur, organizer, and equity thought leader from East Oakland, California. With over 20 years of experience, Chaney has dedicated their life to empowering Black and Brown communities and addressing systemic inequities through organizing, entrepreneurship, and policy advocacy.

Listen back to hear from Chaney about their new role along with a discussion on what’s happening with the City Budget, School District Budget + what that means for taxpayers and voters alike.

About Chaney:

In 2016, Chaney founded Town Biz Oakland, a cultural and social justice brand fostering Oakland culture and community connection. They also co-founded The People’s Dispensary, a cannabis dispensary, leading efforts to shape equitable cannabis policies and advocate for individuals disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs. Their work in this sector earned multiple awards, including Oakland Rising’s Business of the Year in 2017.

Chaney continues to drive change as Chair of the Oakland Cannabis Regulatory Commission and a California Assembly Delegate for District 18. Their leadership reflects a commitment to creating lasting, community-driven solutions that uplift marginalized communities and promote justice across Oakland.

And now, we’re thrilled to welcome Chaney as Oakland Rising Action’s new Voter Engagement Director, where they’ll be leading our efforts to educate Oaklanders on the issues so that we can collectively flex people power.
