At a time with so many challenges facing our communities, it is more important to come together and celebrate our victories and collective power. Join us on June 22nd as we celebrate the work of Oakland’s social justice community – the activists, organizations, and other leaders who advance community-led solutions that lift up the interests of our working class, immigrant and communities of color. With Oakland Progressives Party + Townie Awards just a week away, we’re now offering community-discounted tickets for $20. Get your tickets today!
We’re thrilled to honor people and organizations who embody bold, innovative, values-based transformational leadership with our Townie Awards. This year’s Townies go to:
Arab Resource & Organizing Center (AROC) – Townie of the Year: A main organizer behind the San Francisco airport actions against the Trump administration’s Muslim immigration ban, AROC is a grassroots organization working to empower and organize the Arab community towards justice and self-determination for all.
Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP) – Townie Volunteers of the Year: APTP is a group of concerned organizations and individuals committed to ending state-sanctioned (government) murder of Black, Brown and poor people.
Planting Justice – Eco-Warrior Townie: Planting Justice empowers people directly impacted by mass incarceration and other social inequalities with the skills and resources to build food sovereignty and economic justice.
Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ) – Youth Advocate Townie: CURYJ interrupts cycles of violence and poverty by motivating and empowering young people who have been impacted directly and indirectly by the criminal justice system to make positive change in their lives and prepare them to become the community leaders of today.
Honorable Barbara Lee – Government Official Townie: For nearly two decades, Congresswoman Barbara Lee has represented Oakland and neighboring cities with outspoken advocacy of policies that support our working class communities of color including legislation to lift millions of American families out of poverty and into the middle class.
The Hood Incubator – Local Business Townie: The Hood Incubator transitions underground cannabis entrepreneurs to legal markets by translating and augmenting their existing capacities.
We hope you can help us celebrate the positive impacts that our honorees and all racial, economic and environmental justice activists, organizations and other leaders in our community continue to make!
